Idiopathic Scoliosis of the spine is the most common form of scoliosis. Idiopathic means that the cause of scoliosis is unknown.
For this reason scoliosis can be treated only symptomatically.
Scoliosis is a three dimensional deformity of the spine. It means that changes occur in three planes: frontal, sagittal and transverse plane. That is why three - dimensional correction is necessary.
Posture plays an important role so we try to help scoliotic patients to achieve the best possible posture and what is more to teach them to maintain the corrected posture in daily activities. Physical awareness and sense of posture is very important.
Idiopathic Scoliosis is associated with increased back pain, reduced pulmonary function and this increase risk of shorthess of breath, poor self-image and poor quality of life.
The main goals of scoliotic management are:
-
stop progression of the curvature
-
decrease pain
-
improve pulmonary function
-
avoid surgery in most cases
Intensive conservative treatment employs an individualized exercises programme based on physiotherapeutic methods, following principles described by Katharina Schroth.
This treatment is recommended for people who suffer from scoliosis and also with hyperkyphosis and Scheuermann's disease.
